Brain-eating amoeba detected Lake Jackson water;
A 'do not use' water advisory that was in effect for several communities Friday night into Saturday morning has been lifted for everyone except those in Lake Jackson. The order was originally issued after naegleria fowleri -- also known as a brain-eating amoeba -- was detected in the water.

Isnt it a little late for this? Dont these things largely exist during the summer where the water is much warmer? Seems like we're at the end of the warm water season.

Had one of those once. Poor little fella starved to death.

The amoeba was found in water samples taken after a 6 year old died from it in Lake Jackson. He got it at a community splash pad.

Naegleria fowleri is a protozoa. There is no immunity to it. It gets in your nose from contaminated water, eats its way through your olfactory nerve and then munches on your brain.

Serious question: Does that make it safe to EAT/DRINK? And why is it showing up in treated city water?

It's safe to eat/drink because it gets destroyed by your stomach acid. It's only when it gets into your nasal cavities that its dangerous.

That’s what I thought. So was the advisory a “do not drink” or “do not use” warning?
ETA: NM, I see OP said “do not use”.

As tigerthetooth said, it’s killed by stomach acid. However, it’s best not to imbibe untreated water any time because of the possibility of snorting out the nose.
It can show up in community water systems that have faulty treatment procedures. The three chemicals most commonly used as primary disinfectants are chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone.

They will starve to death once it gets to the point where there is nothing but Dallas Cowboy fans to feed on.
