submarines are pretty disconcerting even if you're just touring one in the harbor. I went in one and felt incredibly confined.
Put it underwater the feeling has to be a lot worse.
Then add to that actually being attacked. Got to be psychologically devastating.(Robert Mitchum actually says "there's nothing worse" than being on a sub under attack in the classic war movie The Enemy Below)

I have lived through a few mortar attacks and feel like being in a sub that has been hit would be much more terrifying. Hats off to those submarines you have my respect.

Submarine clearly.
Remember that Russian sub the Kirsk (sp.?). Horrifying way to die.

I always thought every submarine guy should have a pistol with one bullet just in case he has to kill himself.

Most sub accidents I heard of death isn't subtle or quick. I couldn't imagine sitting at the bottom of the ocean waiting to die.

During repairs, workers found the bodies of 66 West Virginia sailors who were trapped below when the ship sank. Several were lying atop steam pipes, in the only remaining air bubble of flooded areas. Three were found in a storeroom compartment, where they had survived for a time on emergency rations and fresh water from a battle station; a calendar indicated that they were alive through 23 December.

Submarine for me. Nowhere to run. At least in a fox hole you have the option to run even if it isn't a good idea.

I took a short ride on one of the tourist subs in Honolulu and almost had a panic attack when the depth meter hit 100'. Can't imagine spending real time on one.

submarine by fa. at least if you're hit by a shell, death is instant.

I remember one of the things my first tank commander in Germany told me was the best use of the M9 was to shoot yourself in the head if you end up trapped in a burning tank.

Seems like legit advice.

Sub - way more dangerous if there is any depth at all. A near hit that breaches the sub's hull and everyone onboard dies. In a foxhole, a near miss means injury not death...
That's not actually always true. Depending on the size of incoming artillery fire, a near miss can kill from it's concussive force alone.

I'd want the foxhole if I could escape, but if death was certain, honestly I don't see why drowning is that bad of a way to go. I'd rather drown than be shot to death, so for certain death, I'd go with the sub.

Fire has always been a tankers worst nightmare. When a tank is hit and penetrated, the best thing is if you're killed instantly. You won't even know what's happened. You won't even hear the shot that gets you. This is what you want, if you're going to die in a tank....
In this situation, you're dead before you know it.
But if that initial hit dose not make the tank blow up up and instead the tank "brews up", then you're faced with being inside a giant blast furnace. A burning tank is not just a big fire, it's literally more like a blow torch like this....
frick that.
