He's bright enough to take either side of a debate as a contrarian, then point out flaws in an opposing argument. As most positions come with flaws (perceived or factual), spotlighting those can be disquieting.
As manifested in various threads here, an echo chamber is more comfortable. Folks like "comfortable." Take it away, and they get pissed.
