So what do the number classifications mean as a medic, i.e. 68w, 91w?
Posted on 7/20/16 at 9:53 am to upgrayedd
68w is the current MOS for your basic (Army) combat medic. The MOS used to be 91B/91A (depending upon your EMT certification) and then (briefly) became 91W. It was part of a standardization process to align an enlisted MOS with an officer AOC. For medical, we go (for officers) 60 series (Medical Corps) through 73 series (Medical Service Corps - Behavioral Health). 68 fits inside that range. You have a lot of 68 series;
68A - Biomedical Maintenance
68C - Licensed Practical Nurse
68D - Operating Room
etc

We are (seriously) getting closer, but they are built around the officer AOC (like the 60 to 73 thing I just mentioned). They now parallel each other.
60 - Medical Corps (Officer)
61 - Medical Corps (Officer)
62 - Medical Corps (Officer)
63 - Dental Corps (Officer)
64 - Veterinary Service Corps (Officer)
65 - Medical Specialist Corps (Officer)
66 - Army Nurse Corps (Officer)
67 - Medical Service Corps (Officer)
68 - Enlisted Corps
No 69 - You dirty minded person you
70 - Medical Service Corps (Officer)
71 - Medical Service Corps (Officer)
72 - Medical Service Corps (Officer)
73 - Medical Service Corps (Officer)
The other piece (I don't think the other services do this) is the skill level (based on grade) and the ASI (based upon skills). They do tend to make things kind of crazy.
My AOC is 70H (no skill level - only for enlisted) and I have several ASI (5W - Jumpmaster, 5P - Parachutist, 2B - Air Assault, etc). Yeah, it is kind of wacky.

We do this to an extent, but nowhere near like the Army does.

The Marines are pretty simple. It goes by the S shops basically
S-1---Admin----MOS 01xx
S-2---Intel-------MOS 02xx
S-3---Ops-------MOS 03xx(infantry)
S-4---Logistics-MOS 04xx
S-5---Plans-----MOS 05xx(MAGTF Planner) I don't actually know what these guys do.
S-6---Comm----MOS 06xx
Then a bunch of random shite but almost everyone falls into those MOS's

Have to keep it simple, especially for the enlisted "half."

No joke, I am at the recruiters in 1980 (yeah, I am that old) and did very well on the ASVAB (much better than I should have) so the recruiter starts asking me what MOS I wanted (he was a 12B, combat engineer). When I told him 11B (infantry) he about fell out of his chair. Literally begged me for an hour to change to something else. He was a good dude. But I did not listen. Good times.
ETA: Just for laughs
