obviously not a member, they're not allowed to wear the jackets outside of the club.

How does this happen to a man?

I'd bet $50 that his wife bought it for him - a "gift for the man who has everything and who loves golf". He probably thinks it's ridiculous too, but he has to appease his wife by wearing it once or twice before "losing it" at the back of his closet.

I thought members were generally not allowed to remove the jacket from the grounds

I was at that mass. I have known him and his wife for a long time. They are good people. That green coat is way better than what others were wearing. Jorts, jerseys and sandals! Really?

This.
The only person who can (by the rules of Augusta National) correctly wear a Masters' green jacket off the premises at Augusta is the current reigning Open Champion.
I hope Bubba wore his to Hooters.
So (according to protocol) Tiger or Arnie cannot wear a Green Jacket to dinner at their respective houses next week.

The current winner can take his jacket with him for one calendar year. When the previous year's winner puts the jacket on the new winner he is required to turn his jacket in to the clubhouse steward who has it cleaned and then returned to the champions locker room.
Members are not allowed to take their jackets off the grounds without permission. It is likely they have replicas made but the original must remain on the grounds. This is to prevent the jackets from being sold or traded.

and what prevents the winner from having a replica made and turning that in?

OK Augusta, here's your jacket back and don't look at eBay for the next week.

Well considering the only jacket that can be removed from Augusta national is the one belonging to the current masters champion, it's obviously a fake

do you think a winner would sell it?(until they're a destitute skid row bum trying to raise money for some mad dog?)

The hole location for masters logo is slightly off on that jacket

Gary Player has his first jacket in South Africa. He never brought it back after he won.

The original jackets are only made by the approved manufacturer on an authentic order directly from the club. The originals are also numbered.
I am certain there are ways for the club to tell an original from a replica. Not to mention who wants to break the rules and risk getting thrown out of the club when it is so hard to get in.

I read where the club has a record of every authentic green jacket ever issued but there are a handful of them that have been sold. All of the jackets out on the market were pre-1980 issue

I guarantee I can take that jacket(or a Picasso for that matter,) to SA or the Philippines, have one made for everyone on the OT, and the snobs at the "club" would be none the wiser
