I would say millennials were born from 85 to 1998.

1981-1996 is very widely accepted and that's what the Pew research center just came out with as their date range.
Anything later than 1996 is an extremely minority opinion. The term millennial came from the statement that this generation came of age at the turn of the millennium. Even 1996 is a stretch for that, but they were 4 and were 5 for 9/11, which was a significant event to which researchers have tied millennials together.

Yeah, I jack with millennials on here, but they aren’t all the same. I know that, and the same goes for people in all these generations. What’s really ugly though is that which does plague millennials more so than the other generations, and that’s what you just described. This weird lack of social skills and/or social anxiety in public.
Just last night I grabbed some food at Whole Foods and I struck me as so very odd how people walk right by you and refuse to even make eye contact, much less acknowledge your existence with a smile or hello. The young lady in front of me checking out couldn’t even muster a very basic thank you after checking out and the checker said “thank you, have a nice evening”. Just walks away like it’s all a TV show and these aren’t real live people around her. So very fricking odd behavior compared to when I grew up.

1961 is too old for Gen X.

I'll give you that. I didn't say the one I provided was the gospel - just that I came across it at work today. I'm looking at the one you referenced now.
In any event, I just told the woman that put together the presentation that she should do some more research Based on what I've seen here she's likely to get some pushback when delivering this

I'd be a Gen X by that criteria but I think most lists have me at the end of the Boomers.

Traditionalists: 1925-1942
Baby Boomers: 1943-1960
Generation X: 1961-1981
Millennials: 1982-2002
Homelanders: 2003-Present

Woo. Last year of gen x.

According to the Census Bureau:
Baby Boomers are 1946-1964

I started by calling the Census Bureau. A representative called me back, without much information. "We do not define the different generations," she told me. "The only generation we do define is Baby Boomers and that year bracket is from 1946 to 1964."

What about before 1925? This thread is ageism.

The mostly dead generation.

quote:Scruffy, as a millennial and someone who has really looked into this, the media has tarnished the millennial name. When "Millennial" was coined it was meant for the generation that "came of age" around the turn of the century. A group that lived an early life before the internet, and grew up in the technology revolution. It is also know as the Oregon Trail Generation.
Millennial here.
Scruffy’s generation sucks and is filled with a bunch of selfish cry baby retards.
The retarded media ran with the term to mean anyone born before the millennial. Which just doesnt make sense. Someone who was born in the 80's is completely different than someone born in 1995.

It should be like 1982ish to 1988ish based on the original definition. 12-18 at the new millennium. Any younger and you don't really remember it well.
My BIL is 1994 and it's crazy different even with that size of a gap.

Same here. I don't agree with the ranges - I'm 28 and I don't think I qualify as what most people think of as a millennial. There's a very negative connotation to millennial these days. I didn't start regularly using a computer until around 9th grade. Got my first cell phone in 9th grade, first smart phone in 2010. I remember having gaming consoles but I rarely played them - I would always go outside and play until dark most weeknights. Even at 28 I miss the days when everyone didn't have their head buried in their phone nonstop and people actually talked to each other. Can only imagine what it's like for folks older than us.
I think a lot of this can be explained by where you were raised, country folk vs. city folk.
The generational characteristics probably get blurred if you included location with birth years.
Edit to add: not to mention the addition of associating with uncles/aunts, siblings, or cousins that might straddle one of the age previous age groups.
