Obviously our society isn’t ready to do what China did to shut it down, but we will if we have to.

I'd like to see our government try to lock down the US like China did.

After Katrina, law enforcement with guns (and other citizens) got in control of those who didn’t want to be in control.

The media will be pushing the panic button.

In reality, the cold will come and go for a lot of people. They will be prepared for life to continue as usual if not obstructed by their government or by fear pushed by the media.

Seems likely it will burn itself out, but only if we follow the path of other countries seeing those results.

I think we're set up to not have to rely on the crazy measures seen in China and Italy (we're a less dense country), but we probably need to do the social distancing stuff and crowd avoidance to end up in the same boat (peak and decline)

Will never happen. I don’t think it would even happen if we had an Ebola outbreak.

You have the two crisis schools in play now. The OH MY GOD WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE school and the LOOK AT HOW CHILL AND CYNICAL I AM WHILE I TELL YOU THERE IS NOTHING TO SEE HERE school.

The truth imho is somewhere in the middle. We know that a "superflu" or pandemic of some kind can easily cull the human herd. We also know that modern medicine has it's limitations. So we would be stupid to believe that because it hasn't happened in a mass scale in our lifetime, that it can't happen in our lifetime. There is a kind of affluent society arrogance that never believes things can happen until they do. And while that's annoying, most agree it's less annoying than the constant Panic Brigade that can't stop chirping.

My advice is to just pick a crisis school and RIDE.
Either full panic or full chill.
All the logic in the middle gets crushed.

Allergy season is about to start and people are going to panic thinking they have the virus when it is just the same allergic reactions they have had in the past

You can outgun and outnumber bad guys. You can't outgun and outnumber a virus. A cop who had no qualms about going up against looters won't want to wrestle with a noncompliant quarantine breaker who could kill him by breathing on him. And I don't much blame him.
