Mental Illness is the new lazy excuse for assholes doing a-hole things. Mental health funding is the new panacea for society’s ills.
The vast majority of criminals are assholes who are also drug heads. Very few are legitimately mentally unbalanced to the point they don’t know right from wrong.

I'm almost certain most replies will be less than sympathetic to what you are trying to say. Truth is, TD is riddled with exactly the type of person you are with respect to a relative who is completely in need of help but not many will admit it. We all have that relative(s).
Let's just cut to the chase and say jail isn't rehabilitation. Largely, ignoring symptoms, behavior, economics etc is the easiest way "we" know to deal with "it". Out of sight out of mind so to speak. Then, we love to blame others - like "the system" - when they are in and out of jail and cause other issues.
Let's face it. America is absolutely terrible in handling troubled children, teens, young adults and adults re: mental health.

Speaking from experience, both personal and watching 2 family members off themselves: Drugs are a way to cope with mental illness. They are a grasp at some temporary sanity and quiet when a person has a tornado inside their mind that they cannot quiet.
That being said, mental illness is no excuse for committing crimes. She needs help and consequences. She won't ever get better until SHE wants to. Not because a judge says so. Honestly, a stay in the clink might do her more good than a nice bed in the psych ward. Severe real world consequences can "wake" up a person with a cloudy mind to the point of wanting to get better.
Best of luck. Counseling, proper meds and a will to do better is what she needs.

Well, to be fair, let's face this. There are millions of mentally ill persons that don't commit crimes. You can be mentally ill, know the difference between right and wrong, and choose to commit crime. To blame it all on the illness is a cop out as well.
