Sorry you are to poor to have covered parking at home and your job status has you out with the poors. I'm just busting your balls, got mine at auto zone.

I used my driver's license. A guy who works with my wife used a hoe he had in the back of his truck.

I deal with this almost every morning.

Get a bucket of like room temp water, not hot or cold (you can get away with warm but it's not really worth it).

Crank your car. Get out, start pouring the water on your necessary windows. Windshields last. Once you pour it, it will melt the ice - run your windshield wipers quickly and the water you just poured won't freeze. You're done. I don't bother with a scraper anymore, water works just fine.

If it's really cold, you should probably let your car sit for a while because you can damage it if you drive it straight after you crank it in sub-freezing temps.

And barely warm at that. I've used that method at least a couple hundred times, no problem.

And the article that says it is because the water gets in cracks in the glass and then freezes and busts the glass is just wrong. It's the thermal expansion from the hot water. If part of the windshield suddenly starts expanding because of hot water while another part is still very cold it creates stresses that bust the glass.

Or just go out 15 minutes ahead of time and turn on the ignition with the heaters on.
