When is it time to put a dog down with hip dysplasia?

He is still getting around ok, but spending much more time laying down. About once a month he will fall and can't seem to get up but has other days where he will run around the park like a puppy.

Instead of squatting to go #2, he will half squat and walk around. I assume he is in too much pain to squat all the way down.

I don't think we are at the point of putting him down, but I think it's time to at least have the conversation of when that time is appropriate.

Just curious how you guys handled it...

I have a 8 month old that looks to have hip displaysia. What kind of time frame can you expect for the hip to get worse?

Most dogs have something that brings them joy. A certain treat, swimming in the lake, riding in the car, etc.

As long as they still love whatever that is, they're good. When they lose the zest for life, it's over.

I have my 13yo lab on Rimadyl & Tramadol, twice per day. He's still my Buddy, and I gotta believe, he'll let me know when he's ready...

My vet did the hip dysplasia surgery where they shave the head of the bone. The muscle knits around the joint and the dog is back to normal. My dog can run as a fast as ever. I've heard trial dogs can still compete after the surgery.

Man I can only go by what my vet says and the X-rays show. I noticed she was carrying her left leg slightly and after a coup,e weeks took her to the vet, he could hear it pop as he flexed back and forth, did an X-ray and nearly half of the hip bone is displaced out of the joint. She is fairly active when outside and he hopes that maybe it's an injury and will tighten back up. We are a month in to limiting her activity and giving her adequin shots weekly, but does t seem to see much improvement. Have to go back in a week for a follow up and another X-ray

Vet told me if it is in fact displaysia that the deterioration could be anywhere from 1-3 years. I was just looking from some insight from other dog owners who have been through it.

Have you given any meds for hip and joint pain? We use Dosequin DS, and Condhro Care. Really seems to help. I also buy treats that have glucosamin and condroiton.

Bringing in our 8 yr old dog Thursday for surgery to shave the bone to help with the hip and also will have to repair a torn ACL in a back leg. Poor dog keeps bringing a ball to go outside and play but can barely walk. Vet said rehab time will be about four months and we need to watch the dog closely for first eight weeks. No climbing or jumping, which will be difficult as we have multi-levels to the home with 3-4 step stairs.

Should prove to be an interesting time
