^^^This. I would rather have an increase in vacation time than salary at the moment.

If you're "routinely" working 80 hrs a week then your life is fricking horrible and i don't care how much money you're making.

God gave me overtime. For immature children it is hard for you to understand. For a married man raising 4 kids with college on the horizon extra money is needed. Weddings are expensive. Insurance, house note, car note, I am not going to try to explain to kids what they will learn as adults. I paid all school expenses. Provided car and insurance while my kids finished school. Some parents say that they can't afford it. I was glad to have the overtime at certain times in my life. As far as it being cheaper to hire more employees, ask the people who have to staff huge businesses like refineries. The benefits that they provide comes close to the actual wage. So hiring twice the work force is more expensive than working fewer people more hours. Who wouldn't rather be home? And yes I thank ed God for a job that made it possible for me to take care of my family. Unless you have been unemployed when Christmas comes around and your money is tight. Nevermind.

And some can without having to work overtime. You're making sweeping generalizations.

Do you know anything about running a business? I'm guessing not since you work overtime you get paid for. You can't see the Forrest through the trees. It's really expensive to hire and train new employees, and if you are wearing people thing you're going to increase turnover and lower productivity. It's not near as simple as you seem to think it is, which is why you're still working overtime.

How many total OT hours per week do you have? You said you have a few guys that need to work 10+. If it's more than 40 hours total, hire up. Then you don't pay the extra half and you get a grateful employee. Of course you need to factor in benefits.

In Ga you can. I worked at a forklift plant that fired quite a few for not working it.
Typically we worked 58 hours a week with the exception getting the first Saturday of the month off. Our help wanted ads and interviews were worded as “some overtime”. Needless to say , most new hires were pissed when they found out how much OT was required.
I thank God that I went back to school and now have a job where I cannot be forced to work OT unless I am on call. (For the record I am a greedy SOB and averaged 53 Hours a week between February and July but it is nice to be able to say no).

If the overtime is consistently given then you should hire a new employee. It is cheaper to pay a new employee standard wages instead of an existing one OT.
But if it is just seasonal or short term then spend the OT.
Tell the employee who is complaining that it is required and if he doesnt like it he can quit.

Just because they did it doesn't mean that it was legal

Simple: Hire the people who want the hours and tell the complainers to take a hike.
People who complain about overtime get no sympathy from me.

Under federal law it is legal, so of course that would vary by state. Here in Arkansas you can certainly be fired for declining OT hours.

Some you can, some you can't. I'm just saying that employers do shite that's technically illegal all the time.

I would kill for 10 hours of overtime a week. They need to be grateful.

Exactly. The only reason I work is so I can afford to pay my bills and do the things I like to do. I make enough money without OT. I'd rather be living my life than at work. Working all the time is bullshite if you don't have to do it.
Tell your employees up front if OT is normal for the job. Let them decide if they want to work there.

It most certainly is. I have read many of the labor laws in Ga and they are horribly stacked in favor of the employer.
Not a one of those people won their unemployment, even on appeal.

That's for sure. Son's girlfriend was over for dinner the other night, she's a nice girl, but not very smart. Career waitress type. But she's a nice girl. Anyway, she currently works at Pizza Hut and the other night she's telling us that ever since she's been working there (about a year) she hasn't been making enough in tips on average to even equal the minimum wage. I asked her if Pizza Hut had been making up the difference. She didnt have any idea what I was talking about. I explained to her that by law employers had to make sure tipped staff were earning at least the minimum wage. Meaning , for example, if over a 40 hour work week her $2.65 plus tips only came out to $7.00 an hour, Pizza Hut had to pay her an additional $1.25 an hour for all 40 hours. She had no idea, so I told her to bring her pay stubs for the entire year to me. I looked them over and no they had not been doing so. I find it hard to believe that this company didn't know that they were supposed to be doing so, so I find it more likely that they were doing something illegal and hoping not to get caught.
This girl's mother is not even as smart as she is and her father is not in the picture. So I advised her to go in and talk to HR. She did, they told her they were acting within the law,, so I went in and talked to them, miracouslly they discovered "oh we haven't been doing it right " and cut her a check for the difference that day, with a not so subtle reminder from me that it would also be illegal to retaliate against this girl by firing her or whatever.

I will complain 100% of the time I have to do OT because you and your company over book the workforce. Get more people you cheap arse. Don't over promise either on deadlines.

That's an extra work week a month.
Yeah it matters. You paying OT?

I could never work a second of overtime and I'd be thrilled. I hate working OT. I live well within the means my base salary provides.

This.
Companies value their employees time at one rate, but I value my free time at another rate. I don't always like giving up 'my time' to someone who gives it a lesser value than I do.
As I've said to people, I'm employed by so-and-so, but I'm working for me.
