In my thiry's I realized that I couldn't dribble like I once did but I could still shoot and play D. I could hold my own. Still one of the better players in most pickup games although not the best.
Long about 42-43 I was still playing pickup at the Y but the competitiveness had gotten so bad that I just didn't want to risk getting hurt anymore. Of course, that was based on the broken ribs I got trying to rebound against younger dudes who didn't want to get embarrassed by a 40 yr old guy.
Of course I just broke my arm while skiing. Just all of the sudden I'm airborne and twisting in the air. The ride down in the ski patrol tobaggan was kind of cool.
That's my last skiing experience if my wife has any say so.

When they put me in the "legends" soccer league and I started getting kidney stones every year.

36....
I played football at VT and after played rugby in the US Super League, so I thought I was going to be young forever
We were flying back from Santa Monica and the stewardess comes up and asks me if I can get some of my team mates to calm down, and I asked why she was asking me, and she said, oh, I thought you were the coach
But later that year, we played a game down in Jacksonville and I still felt I was a good player. Well, they put up the game film at the bar after the game, and I was like who is that slow guy....oh that is me
retired that yea...

I'm 47 and still play indoor soccer with players in their late 20's who played D3 soccer in college. I'm by no means good vs. that group but I don't get embarrassed either. There are several guys on opposing teams who try to either juke me out of position or just blow past, but it doesn't work.
That said, if we were playing outdoors I'd be in real trouble b/c the field is much larger. I'm a half-step slower, in an indoor field that doesn't matter so much b/c we run out of room before the other guy can turn the corner.

Late 20s' into early 30's. I began to struggle with timing in my late 20's. The jammed fingers when trying to defend a pass were the first evidence. I ruptured my ACL at at age 30--------> done.

I played softball well into my 50's and was still the leadoff batter and playing outfield. My work schedule prevented me from continuing on a weekly basis so I quit.
About 15 years later, I found my self teaching high school at my alma mater and they had a faculty/ROTC game at the end of the year. Of course I participated and at my first at-bat hit a nice liner into right field and decided to take it all the way to third when I noticed the right fielder being slow getting the ball back to the infield.
I knew I'd have to slide into third, but base-running was my specialty. I executed a perfect hook slide and it would have been successful had I not come up about two feet short of getting to the base.
What was going on in my mind was not being duplicated on the ground. Embarrassing.
