It started when people started forgetting the “why?” of Easter and the commercial interests slipped in the Easter Bunny and tons of sugary stuff in, in place of Jesus and the empty tomb.

I was born in 1983. When my sister and I were kids, my parents (The Easter Bunny) would give us two baskets each: one with candy and one with toys. So being that this was done in the 80s and 90s, I’d say this isn’t a new thing.
Sorry your parents didn’t love you.
