Its about the safety of the drivers that have to avoid your body on the road. Or the people that have to scrape you off the road.

And yet I still see folks all the time on motorcycles wearing shorts and flip flops. I wouldn't recommend wearing lace-up shoes either.

You want to increase the chances the person driving the car remains in control of their vehicle, especially after the initial accident occurs.

Leather protects you from the road shredding your flesh if you're in an accident. Even if you're wearing blue jeans they'll not protect you. All jeans will do is give the doctors more to dig out of your wounds in the ER.
