How do you know how it's supposed to appear? This is the folly with poetry and the study of literature. Everyone claims to know why something was written, or have some keen insight into the motives of the author.

The whole postmodernist interpretation of the poem ruins it IMO.

It's universally relatable on its surface. It seems obvious what the author was feeling at that moment because it's something we all feel. The pull of modern life's responsibilities vs. the pull of nature's simplicity.

Daily life (promises to keep) and societal norms (another guy owning property remotely from in town) are supposed to prevent a guy from enjoying snow in the woods that is not his property.

Even the horse has been conditioned that artificial rules exist to prevent enjoying life's simpler pleasures.

Sad, really.

I can't believe I've read 2 pages of this and I'm the only one who thinks this is a simple story about a guy stopping to take a piss.

Not just any guy...it's Santa Claus taking a break to marvel at the world on Christmas Eve. The pre-magical Santa Claus who delivered presents to local children as a good Samaritan.

Hence his "miles to go" and "promises to keep" and his evening journey with his horse and sleigh bells through the snowy countryside.

Clearly a poem about death. He's surrounded by death (snowy evening) perhaps even losing close family and friends. He seems to feel alone and may even be thinking about his own death, giving him a sense of urgency to handle some personal affairs. It's almost like a graveyard inspired this poem.

The poem is about him being surrounded by death, confronting his mortality, and recognizing that his time may not be now, but his time to "sleep" is definitely coming.

All of us are approaching death, and all of us has to come to terms with our mortality at some point.

Listen to this song composed by Eric Whitacre and you'll get a better understanding of what Frost was trying to convey I think. The harmonies are haunting.

Stopping By Woods

We performed a rewritten version in La All State Chorus (#1 tenor 2, subtle brag) in 2007 called Sleep. Whitacre had to re write the lyrics because he didn't secure permission from Frosts trust before composing the work and ultimately was sued. I'm not sure which version I like the best, but as far as vocal compositions, you can't get much better than this piece in my opinion.

Sleep

ETA: I can't even think about this song without getting chills. Truely a masterful composition.

It is about the plight of the rural male. He feels a call towards nature, but his responsibilities wont allow him to enjoy the little things. Other's needs (read: the horse), such as shelter and safety force the man to snap back to reality, and oh there goes gravity. He's so mad, but he won't give up that easy.

Edit: There are at least 10 farms on LSU's campus right now that are better looking.
