Found this article from a while back...thought I remembered seeing something about this. They suggest using a soft brush and dishwashing soap as a treatment option. LINK

Its a fungus. Go to a plant store and get an algicide.

Mine had this and it took 2 seasons to get it to bloom again.

lol why do yall even waste your time posting if you're not competent enough to even post a simple chemical name. You didn't help him at all

frick you, a-hole! I'm not a goddamn horticulturist! I had the same problem a few years ago and I don't remember the name of the crap that I was sold from the nursery. I just know it worked. Any decent nursery will know what is needed to get rid of it.

His question was "what is wrong with his crepe myrtle." I answered that.

What did you contribute to this thread?

Do you just spray it on and leave it or does it need to rubbed in?

You can just spray it on, let it sit a little then spray it with water and it should come off.

Black Residue on Crepe Myrtle

quote:

Black Sooty Mold Sooty mold typically covers stems, branches and foliage, giving the appearance of black soot covering the plant. The mold itself is not dangerous and can be washed away with water, but it does ruin the appearance of plants. Treating the mold consists of ridding your crape myrtles of aphids or other plant-sucking insect

Not true. Tie a chain around them, tie it to your truck, rip it out of the ground. Rip out the few remaining small roots out of the ground by hand. be a man.
Just ripped out 6 of my mature crepe myrtles, and I've got 4 more to go.

I'm afraid that still wouldn't work.

I had a big crepe myrtle cut down, dug up completely... huge hole and planted a Leyland Cypress right where the myrtle was... and danged if there aren't some crepe myrtle shoots or whatever growing right up through the branches of the Leyland Cypress.

I wish all the crepe myrtles around my house/work would get that. Damn things bloom almost year round and I'm apparently allergic.

I hate crepe myrtles

With a frickin passion. I'm gonna get my wish one of these days... Got 2 mature ones in the front and some dumbass who owned this house before me planted one right in the middle of the back yard. All it does is leave shite on my boat. Damn doves won't even roost in it.

1) cut the bastard off at the ground
2) drill holes in the stump
3) pour indiscriminate herbicide in holes
4) wait
5) dig the rest of that devil tree up and plant something less evil
