re: What’s the worst you’ve ever done in an interview?

I started a print advertising sales job the last week of January in 1984. Ended up working there for 28 years, but about twenty years into it, I went on a few interviews, just to see what was out there. Some of my past co-workers had interviewed for, and taken some positions with more advancement opportunities. I was up front about having a good job already. All of them basically wanted me to bring, not only my own client list with me, but they also wanted me to print out, and bring the company's whole list. Thinking about it now, the only way I would do something like that would be if I were starting a business of my own.I

When I first got out of school, I had a job lined up. I worked that job for six months, and was let go because they lost some of their sales territory. During the interviews I did then, I had one with IBM, to sell copiers. They required you to buy a van to drive around and show the copiers. I wasn't willing to do that because I'd just bought another vehicle.

Another place I interviewed was a company that did the student discount cards. They wanted you to go from college town, to college town, selling businesses on being involved with the card. Even though I was already 23 years old, I looked like I could have still been 19 or 20 years old. That, and my six months of experience driving, and selling, DFW, East Texas, Eastern OK, and North Louisiana, were the big reasons they wanted me. My pitch was to lead the business decision makers into thinking I was a college student.

i had an “interview” without even knowing i was being interviewed once.

i knew the GM pretty well and stopped on my way home to get some paperwork signed.
GM asked if i was doing anything and offered me to join him and the VP for a beer or two. figured why not.

spent the next hour and a half just bullshitting at a local bar. most of it spent telling them how terrible they were at what they did (all in good natured ribbing) and why the competition was beating them.

next day i get a phone call offering me a really nice position (which i took).

had i known that was an actual interview i doubt seriously i would have taken that approach.
maybe wouldn’t have gotten the job either.
