It came from The Tigers Lair back in 1999. The LSU site was one of the first open forums
A guy named Hail Reagan ran it. Posters would post news a day old or so. The site was very simple
And like the OT the posters would jump on them with Eli W and the cotton gin was invented or the Japs bomb Pearl Harbor as an old news reference
As an avid movie quoter I said Germans in response to a post. And it stuck. I left the Lair and years later found TD. Lo and behold Germans was still being used. So love or hate me it's still being used.

The Michigan State message board I used to post in with regularity always used it as well.
ETA: Having read the rest of the thread, perhaps it was picked up from the original uses on this board and/or its predecessor. Who knows.
