My wife and I actually love each other.
Liking the person you're with is way more important. My best friend and yes, I love her.
I've seen couples divorce after retirement because they realized they didn't like being around the other all day.

It's an institutional systematic cockblock. Women definitely made that rule
And the most ignorant statement of the thread (and there are many) goes to you. Women made up marriage? Marriage has been around for thousands of years. And depending on what your views are, women most certainly were the LAST to make a decision of this caliber as they held little social value.
That said, marriage and loving the other person is a choice. We are all selfish people who desire ourselves and what we want over any other person (Bible speaks to this - and the origins of marriage). Marriage isn't always about what I want.

In other words..... Marry a unicorn.

most people i know did it for financial reasons, kids, houses, and all the other cliche' type bs...Most of them are unhappy
For example, here's our disney or beach pics wiht the kids, look how happy we are...Then 5 min later everyone is mad, kids are screaming...sounds great don't it

But with divorces on the rise, doesn't that defeat the point of marriage?
I read recently that divorces are actually going back down, and by a lot, for Gen X and Millenials. Mainly due to less people under 40 rushing into marriage and co-habitating first.
Also, fewer people are getting married overall. One of the reasons for this is more women have careers.

Divorces for first marriages have been trending down since the 70's. The serial marry-ers have been driving up the number.
Also is the thread where all the bitter alone and divorced people post about how marriage is stupid?

The bureaucratization of sex.
To make sure you don't have a bunch of poor, bastard children running around.

Status quo. It's what girls are told from childbirth it's just a damn fairytale.
Thank god they can't get any of your inherited property or financials because my ex would be pretty well off if so.
I was broke when we got married and I was broke 15 yrs later.
Thanks mom for watching out for me for the future.

Sure the tax breaks are nice,
If you're married on the higher income side with no kids, you'll most likely be paying a tax penalty.
