Not the same thing.
River Pilots get on a ship and tell the captain which way to steer and get get off at a certain point.
A boat captain stays with the boat.
I have several friends who are are riverboat pilots, they make around $500-800 a day. River Pilots make over $250,000 a year.

And no, you don’t have to be born into it. Each pilot gets a certain amount (I think it’s 2) of nominations and they can use those for anyone they choose; but of course people are going to choose family first. You also have guys that don’t have kids or their kids don’t want to do it.

Average pay for the Riverboat Pirates is North of $600K/yr. Most are winners of the lucky sperm club, a scarce few are from political connections (like John Alario’s kid)

Actually, this is easier than you may think. My FIL is in a runoff currently for a federally recognized tribe.
