Like I said the problem is written terribly. Theres a reason you dont see the obelus past middle school, it's vague and ambiguous.

Plug it into a calculator the exact way it is written. Does the calculator give you any answer other than 58?

If the writer of the problem wanted you to get 10, they would have written the problem differently.

I think some earlier TI calculators might give you 10, but these are generally accepted as being wrong.

So depending on the calculator you might get 10 or 58?

No modern calculator will get 10. Older calculators used to evaluate implied multiplication more strongly than explicitly multiplication. In other words, 1/2x was interpreted as (1/2)x. It is now accepted that implied multiplication is no higher priority than explicit multiplication, hence, 1/2x = 1/(2x).

My point still stands. Under modern accepted rules, the answer is 58.

It's not a question. If there's just a number inside then it's just multiplication

I'm just pointing out the controversy of the problem as it is playing out in this thread. I agree the answer is 58.

58

36/2 x 3 + 4

18 x 3 + 4

54 + 4

58

Its 10, no calculator needed

I vaguely recall this being the case in the 288 thread, but those were for older calculators. Modern TI calculators would give the correct answer.

Lets do this abstractly.

Youre saying that a/bc was once taken to mean (a/b)c, but now means a/(bc), correct?

I'm ashamed of some of you idiots on this thread. I know we have a bunch of them on the OT, but even this is ridiculous. This is simple simple simple math. The fact that a lot grown up adults here can't figure out that it's 58 makes me fricking sick to my stomach considering we have so many morons procreating on this earth.

We fricked up as a species when we started to prevent nature from killing the stupid and their bloodlines.

For the love people, with PEMDAS you have to do division & multiplication left to right. So in this case you would do 36 (the result of 6^2) divided by 2 which equals 18. 18 x 3 = 54. Finally, 54+4=58.

Final Answer is 58.

At this point anyone saying 10 has to be trolling right...I mean there is no other reasonable answer to why people still think the answer is anything other than 58.

This is the stupidest shite. No mathematician/engineer/any fricking person that uses math for a living would use such retarded notation to denote a problem. This crap is click bait mathematical semantics. And it's just easy enough for everyone to participate in, and just tricky enough so that some people get that nice sense of superiority that comes with solving fricking arithmetic math and talking about how other need not procreate.
