re: What's more important: Career you enjoy but low pay, or career you don't but good pay?

I'll always take a job with less money that I enjoy over a higher paying job that I hate.

I enjoy what I do. Thats worth a lot of money to me.

With a family of three I would be fricking miserable on 45k. Since my family is my life, I'll take the money. Even enjoyable work is still work.

Go for what you enjoy. Working for money wears you down quickly and quality of life is has value.

Its a personal question that a message board can’t answer. Like everyone else in the world you’ll have to figure yourself out and what makes you tick. Personally, I could never be happy in my career if I wasn’t always moving up in responsibility and reward. It’s something you’re either driven towards or not. You don’t always love your current job but you may choose it because it could potentially lead to something else down the road...gaining experience you’ll need for a greater role somewhere else in the future. The goal should be to work for great companies where you can learn as much as possible and build relationships. If you’re inclined to sacrifice some and work your arse off the money will likely happen down the road. My first job out of college in construction started at $45k and ended up around $75k after 5yrs but I was working 60-70 hr weeks on average. Hated it most of the time but they’re an industry leader where I learned a ton and made great industry relationships. A lot of those relationships now result in work for the business I own.

Some people can find peace in just earning a living and having little responsibility. It takes all types and there’s nothing wrong with that. I sometimes envy people that can find peace like that because I’ve never really been that type. Question for you is to figure out what type of person you really are.
