Scanners don't pick up as much live police action as they did 20 years ago.

I use it for railfanning. Pretty inexpensive and not a pain in the arse to carry around.

This.

From my very limited research (I wanted a good scanner too), to get major police departments these days you need equipment that can be several hundred dollars minimum, and even then the homicide channels and channels during major events (terror attacks, shootings, riots probably) are encrypted.
