re: What you travel ball coaches and parents think about sliding mitts?

I'm 30 and never once wore batting gloves (Jorge Posada style), still don't golf with any gloves, never wore a necklace, I had a Chaos Nike $30 baseball glove (love that glove) until a ball busted through the seams from too much use, never wore sunglasses any game, still don't own any sunglasses, only ever owned 1 bat ($70).
All I wore was assigned uniforms up to High School grad. That was it.
My biggest purchase was a $70 Vapor bat in 5th grade. I used that until I got a crack in it. Other than those 2 years, I just used other people's bats on the team. I never went to any baseball camp, and I was only 1 of 2 guys on the team that hit a home run in HS. I was also 6'2, 150 lb, so spaghetti arms trotted the bases.
Alright, lotta subtle bragging, but for those that think 30 is young, there's still many of us out there.

We always slid feet first and that’s what I taught my son. The head first dive just seems to be inviting injury in several ways. Plus you don’t get to spike the baseman when you slide in…haha..
This...teach your son to slide feet first. Sliding head first when games really dont matter is just dumb. When you are a HS senior in the playoffs...sure. He needs to learn to properly get back on pickoff attempt...but slides into any other bases should absolutely be feet first.

i am the opposite,i taught mine the correct way to slide both feet and head first and let him decide with the rule being must go head first on pick off and must be feet first into home.

The key is practicing. There is nothing wrong with a feet first slide. Its traditional, its baseball as it was played 100 years ago.
I have zero issues with travel ball at its core. If kids wanna play ball, thats awesome. What is not logical, is pretending these tournaments matter. Kids sliding head first is far more of an injury risk than any kind of speed you are rewarded with. Young kids(under 14) making a traveling team and sitting the bench for entire games or being relegated to right field every other game is dumb. Youth baseball is about learning to play the game, not winning weekend tournaments. Winning a weekend tournament doesnt teach kids anything about life. Kids that are studs when they are 11, half the time are not that good once other kids physically mature to match them. I was a decent player before 12...but became one of the best players once my body started changing.
Its yalls kids, obviously yall can parent how you want to(777 im talking in general not calling you out). To the OP, id say telling your kid yall are gonna practice sliding instead of buying him some ridiculous overpriced gear to make up for NOT PRACTICING is the better life lesson.

In little League baseball is there really that much head first sliding? I can count on one hand how many times I slid head first into a base in 10 years of youth baseball
The coolest shite we had was batting gloves and eye black

No problem with the sliding mitt.
But the trash ball culcha that permeates from southern travel ball is just disgusting. Parents should be ashamed of themselves for letting Krystchyn leave the house with a mullet, crocks with tube socks, and pit viper sunglasses.

of course they dont, neither do the ones in HS, imo only the HS playoffs matter as far as team goes, the rest are just practice where they keep score and are for making you better and making memories.

depends on the kid, some are capable some arent

agreed 100% to an extent. I personally believe kids should rotate between 3 different positions and should change every inning through april. At the least on saturday they should and atleast through May & June should be your championship season where you play to win even pool play games
now with that said...there is a lot to be said about earning playing time. ANd many times the 10th player on a really good majors teams gets more out of practice and games than they would on a lower team
i also am of the believe on sundays...you play to win and if that means batting 9, so be it. Sorry but if you want to play more, put in more work and perform on saturdays.

should be about competing and learning to compete
getting a position handed to you and playing time given to you, doesnt teach you shite either.
life is a series of competitions, day in and day out. Can either whine about it or put the work in to get better.[

this is one of those things every one likes to say but rarely is it true. and when it is, its because people consider dink hits and just throwing strikes as being a stud.
it happens because kids are not prepared with the skills that scale for the bigger field and they are physically weak and never put the work in the weight room required to scale to the bigger field.
in the case of it being the biggest kid and no longer being the biggest, its because they only like the game play, not the actual work and when they are no longer the biggest and the skills have to be developed...well that is not what they want to do and wont do it.
and FTR I dont ever take offense to these things. Im around a couple of the best programs in the state enough to know what it takes and am so far down the lifting/performance side of things that none of the insults peopel throw out here bother me at all. 99% of the time it comes from a place of ignorance and being naïve. I was the same pre covid, I thought things where just like it was when i was younger and believed all the bullshite people post on here and on Reddit....I was wrong. just like 99% of the post in the travel ball threads on the OT are wrong.
and people can parent however they want and spend their money however they want, I would never criticize that. But for some reason...the OT loves to tell others how to parent and how to spend their money and criticize constantly. On something 99% have never even remotely looked into.

explain why i am a douchebag.
please do. because my kids play lots of sports through their own choice, I am a douche?
or is it because i speak the truth that its essentially a requirement to do so to make a HS team that is worth a crap, atleast in this state?
or could it be you dont like hearing the truth?

How about you put those sliding mitts to good use, slip them on and take a break from the keyboard
Posted on 7/19/24 at 10:41 am to SelaTiger
You should see the over the top requirements of softball these days. I grew up as a catcher (no I'm not fat nor a lesbian, no pics take my word for it) and didn't use a helmet under my mask until high school. That was legit dangerous, but now all INFIELDERS required to wear masks, pitchers, shortstop, etc.. catcher must leave mask on at all times, including pursuit of foul ball. Mouth pieces must be worn. Ball is bright yellow. Frankly, blocking the plate was half the fun of the position.
I think the boys wear sliding mitts because they see some MLB-ers with them. The girls they treat like total pussies tho.
