And that’s what’s wrong with the world today…….

Where there riots all over the country for Rodney king or was that just L.A.

Pretty much just L.A. IIRC. There may have been some I'm forgetting but nothing like the stuff last summer in most of the country.

I’ve lived most of my life without it. It has some undeniable benefits, but I’d be fine without it.

My wrist sure would be a lot weaker
In all seriousness watched a movie the other day set in the late 80's, early 90's about a guy goofing off in college etc..
The funny part was him walking around campus before smartphones and all. People were actually paying attention to their surroundings. I had forgot what it was like without everyone staring at their phones and smart devices etc..

A lot of people upvoted you and others echoed this or similar opinions. What I want to know is if you (and others) feel this way why are you posting on a forum on the internet? Usually when someone identifies something that is in the way of their happiness and is simple to avoid they do it unless they are addicted.
It seems anyone not addicted and typing this as they stare at a screen is just spouting some bullshite trope.

Its handy, but not necessary. I do think people's mental state was better prior to the internet.
But email is a godsend. I don't think I would enjoy snail mail again.

Less convenient, but more intelligent, focused, contemplative, and rewarding.

Things like online banking, stock brokers, email, GPS, filing taxes etc would be pretty inconvenient to give up.
I do think smartphones probably have had some negative impacts on society, particularly in kids.
