This is completely out of curiosity, but what kinds of things would put up red flags if you have a job where you need a security clearance?

What kinds of things do they take into account?

Bankruptcy, bad overall financial position could also be a concern.

Travel history outside of the country would be looked at.

Financial problems are overwhelmingly the biggest reason for being rejected for a clearance.

Bad credit, domestic violence charges (misdemeanor or felony) that prohibit you from owning firearms, any felonies, and less than honorable discharges to name a few. Sometimes being married to a non-US citizen will cause issues depending on the job and clearance.

The most common reason I've seen over the years is bad credit.

How do they check financial history besides bankruptcy and credit score?

I've missed out on several lucrative opportunities due to unconventional opinions expressed on this board.

Generic background check I would imagine.

Doubt they take it seriously for mall cops.

Truth. Any decent background check company will always reach out to the ISIS HR department to see if you're a member.

Most things that come up for some of our employees or subs are old convictions, even for stupid shite. Sometimes we're required to have them drug tested, obviously that will exclude a lot of them. We had one guy who was on a government watch list and was not granted clearance. I'm assuming it was some far-right/nationalist group the government was monitoring because he was a redneck white dude from the country.

Really, it depends on what type of clearance it is. TWIC clearance or clearance for a nuclear facility isn't easy, but if it's just for basic facility use at a standard military post then it's not terribly hard to acquire.

Getting your hands on the KFC secret recipe should not require a security clearance.

When I went through a background check for a TS clearance, they wanted explanations of all international travel. They met with my ex-girlfriends mom, my old college roommates, asked them questions about my drinking habits and if I used drugs. They pulled my damn high school transcripts. OPM did my background check, and they looked at everything.

Then they got hacked and all of my info they collected was stolen.
