My experience is: It will be fun for about 2 years, until the new wears off, and then it will just be a drag to keep up and a money pit.

BTW, I didn't have a pool put in, mine came with the house.

In-ground liner pool, 18x30x6' deep will run you around $30 with 5' concrete deck surround. That's about as cheap as you can get in an in-ground pool. Bought a 4' deep x about 20' dia above ground Intex pool system for less than $1k a few years ago, and was perfect for just getting in after cutting the grass or chilling with a handful of people. Good starter pool before you sink any big bucks on in-ground. Above ground is probably harder to maintain because there's fewer gallons of water and cartridge filters to keep up with. If you can handle above ground, then you're ready for in-ground.
