My current company does this now. Shite gets old, fast. Instead of a "Christmas Bonus" a donation is made in my name to United Way

One of the first jobs I had deducted for Inited Way from everyone's paycheck, whether you authorized it or not. In subsequent jobs, over a period of almost 40 years, I never donated to United Way again. And, I never will!

Those United Way lovers may want to take a close look at where and what percentages of that money goes...

ions given to them get passed onto many other charities (minus an administration fee), mostly at United Way's choice. It is easy because then the company has to deal with only one charity (versus having to choose from an endless list of choices and then deal with employee complaints about whatever they chose).
Never knew how it operated. This is pretty brilliant.

If my company just donated the amount of money they spent on the campaign instead of threatening the employees to make a minimal contribution, they would come out way ahead and have happier employees.

Exactly, just give your money straight to the charity. I think The United Way is a basically a scam...

wonder if the UW CEO still has a $1.2 million pay package?

We get dumbass door prizes for donating "fair share" amount. Even have the chance for a parking spot!!

The school board tried to get my wife to do payroll deduction. She had to pick the amount to deduct, and "zero" was not an option. I had her write in that she wasnt donating anything and copy it with her signature.
frick the iberia school board and united way.

Its an easy way to make a donation to a charity. You can actually choose which charities you want you donation to go to if you so choose.
If it wasn't easy most people wouldn't donate.
Wonder how many of these hard asses in this thread that will not donate to UW actually donate to a charity?

UW is one of the most corrupt corporate charities in the country.

It's just administratively easy for corps to deliver Community and charitable service through the United Way. United Way has it set up that way. just assign grunt to United Way to hawk donations and voila you have a community integrated corporation

Those are not bad numbers considering they are not a charity in the traditional sense and they support many smaller local charities that would not get interest from the public. You can disagree with their tactics, but they do good work locally.

I have often wondered this as well...I am not sure how a charity can have enough influence to make a company threaten its own employees, but it happens all the time...
it was made clear to me that I should donate, so I typically give a one time donation of ten or twenty bucks just to get my name on the list of donors....
I donate plenty of money to charities every year and just don't think I need to pay anyone to decide where my money needs to go...
one day, the ugly truth will come out about that shite...and when it does, I hope a bunch of frickers wind up in jail over it....
