You'd be the first motherfricker complaining when your house burned to the ground because half of the engine crew took the pickup to the store to get groceries for everyone and the crew wasn't full when you called, so they had to wait for the grocery run to return to the fire house before they could take the fire engine to your house to fight the fire.

FFS why does half the team need to go get fricking groceries? You can’t send one dude on a grocery run? And if something happened he could meet the one person short crew at the fire?

Oh and before you start talking shite about me complaining. My fricking neighbors tree and my house got hit by lightning and I couldn’t even get them in my smoke filled house to check it out. Ended up finding a burnt 2’ hole in the roof later. They showed up, sprayed the tree and we asked them to come check our house out they asked “is it on fire”. I dont fricking know I kinda thought that was your specialty.

Why does it take half the crew to get groceries?

iss money away by sending a ladder truck and the full team to Kroger for groceries and letting it idle out front for 30 minutes.
I think you would see the wisdom if you had to do the budget.

As for credentials. I'm 33 yr. industrial F.F./EMT/HazMat/high rise rescue that held every position including fire chief for the last 10 years of my career. I joined the local V.F.D. where I held every position at one time or another including fire chief for 6 of my 25 years with them.

Because this is how government employees think.

Well, because there are like 5 guys on an engine crew and I assumed two of them went shopping.

It's not as if there are ten dudes on a firetruck.

It seems like I remember them making a few fire engines for NYC after 9/11 but I didn't want to post that and it turn out that my memory was not correct.

We can send 1-2 people in a vehicle to do this. Many departments cut costs by not having these extra vehicles.

One big vehicle does it all.

1) Do firehouses still have the pole to get from the living quarters to the garage and
2) Is it as fun as it looks?

ETA:
Wikipedia has this to say about staircases in firehouses:
"Until 1878, spiral staircases or sliding chutes were common, but not particularly fast. Fire houses were also equipped with spiral staircases so horses would not try to climb the stairs into the living quarters."

I thought so. I distinctly remember that news story and them being driven to NY.

A friend of mine drove the pumper. It came back to N.O. after Katrina. It got a rebuild somewhere in there and La. Fire Marshall had it last I heard. The second was an equipment truck. I don't know what happened to it.

Gotcha - I was 23-24 at the time but I remembered that for some reason because I thought it was really cool.

I hope he dies in a fire. He has been one of the sleaziest pawns in this COVID crap. Peeking in windows and shutting down businesses. He hosted the snitch website to report businesses that were only trying to survive.

I've known him for years. I knew he wants to go to the top BUT I never thought he would stoop that low. JBE's rat.

My nephew had a summer job with the forest service last summer and his supervisor wants him to apply for the wildland firefighting crew next summer. They're always shorthanded. Apparently nobody wants to carry tools and a heavy pack in 100 degree heat. Go figure.

really don’t care about the traffic, I’m more sick of hearing the departments whine about needing money and raises but watching them piss money away by sending a ladder truck and the full team to Kroger for groceries and letting it idle out front for 30 minutes.

Engines and drivetrains need to be started and used on a regular basis for reliability and longevity, rather than starting them daily and letting them sit idling in the firehouse seems a better use of fuel to drive them to the grocery store, also gives the drivers a opportunity to maintain competency driving the trucks when it is not a emergency situation, a fire truck does not handle like F150.

Out of all the wasteful things the government does, you've chosen to single out the fire department.
