Just hit 24 years (9 active the rest reserves) to include a year in Iraq and Afghanistan and I would not change a thing.
Some of the brightest people I've met in my life were military, also some of the dumbest.
You either have been "in" or you haven't, its simple.

As far as permanent duty stations go, I found Germany to be much better from a facilities standpoint than I did the major US posts I spent any amount of time at (Knox, Polk, Hood, & McClellan). Now this was back in the 80's and 90's so things are probably much different now.

I remember "out-processing" in NoLA and people were amazed that I had a ships rocker on my whites..95% of their ideas of a "deployment" was Tennessee for a few weeks to push paper.

I was a tanker so I actually used those crossing pads. I went to Polk right after I came off active duty and went into the AL Army Guard.
My NoGo unit got activated for Desert Storm. I was a gunner on a Bradley and we did some training in Fort Hood with an M1 Abrams unit from the Alabama National Guard. Our primary job was to protect the tanks from ground troupes, but we got the shite beat out of us trying to keep up. The Abrams seemed to float the faster it went...it's a remarkable machine.

-- I was looking to do something that would help me going forward. I was 19. Needed to mature and wasn't real sure of what I wanted to be when I grew up.
-- I was ready to get out of North East Louisiana and see the world a little bit
-- After taking the ASVAB and visiting MEPS, they offered me a job in Intel.... easy decision.
-- My dad and his dad both served in the Army.

I feel this way about reserves/MOST guard members
You realize that guard and reserve were used heavily to ease the deployment burden of active duty troops in Iraq/Afghanistan right?
Now look at you, you've gotten me taking up for the damn guard and reserve.

I do believe the Alabama unit you trained with was probably the same one I joined when my active duty time was up.

I went to Iraq in 07 with 82nd and by then the active/guard reserve dick measuring was just about over.
When I went to Afghanistan in 10 it was seamless, nobody gave a shite where you came from just if you could do the job.
