In an ICU at my grandfather's bedside, watching one organ system after another go into florid failure.
Knowing I'd have to tell my family the next day that there was no hope for recovery, knowing that I'd have to make the call to withdraw care, and knowing I'd never again get to speak in person to the best man I've ever known.

That may be true, but I've spent many nights in much worse places.
I've been to Iraq and Afghanistan several times. I've also spent nights in some jungles almost covered with insects where I thought the ground underneath me would slide downslope at any minute due to torrential rains.
But the worst was a Mexican prison with no other gringos around.
At least they speak English in OPP, the only Spanish I knew was how to order a beer and how to ask where the bathroom was!

Had a friend who trained snipers in Cameron NC for Ft Bragg and the CIA. He has told me stories of what the snipers go through to get a kill shot.

The little shop of horrors, Harris county jail in 2009 while the guards were still killing one a week. In a cell with people hurt so bad that every time they moved a fresh pool of blood would spread out around their bodies. I was like dude please don't move when you move your wounds just break open again.

Top deck of a houseboat at tarpon rodeo. In a plastic chair. One if those cheap ones. I managed to lean back on two legs and fall asleep with my feet up. Got tore up by Mosquitos and breathing diesel fumes all night. Felt like shite
