My parents and we 4 kids grew up in 1300 s.f. My brother and I shared a room and my 2 sisters shared a room. Kids don't need their own rooms.

We had around 1,000 sq. ft. Three boys, all shared the same bedroom. We upsized to around 1,200 ft and three bedrooms when I was 13.

10k square ft. minimum for a family of 4. Anything smaller would be like living in a cardboard box.

Ours, with 4 is about 2,500. It's too big. When the kids are gone, I'll downsize. We rarely use the downstairs unless the kids have friends over.

the wife and i just bought 2000 sq ft home with another 1000 sq ft in the basement. But in the hood we want to live in, its only houses this size or condos under 800 sq ft.

Just the two of us, and no kids. I am sure we will get lost. But we are living in 1300 sq ft and its too small.

We have ~3500 now and I don't think I would want much smaller with 2 kids. I'd say 3000 is the bottom of "ideal".

Yeh, 4-6,000 is ideal. Bedrooms, baths, bonus room, 3 car garage, basement, big kitchen.

Yep. 4-6,000 sq. ft.

I have 2350 right now with my family of 3. It's 4 bedrooms with the 4th being upstairs and used as a man cave that will turn into a play room when the little dude gets a little older.

So if we had a 2nd kid, I wouldn't have an extra bedroom for my parents or any friends who visit to stay in.

I would ideally like to have a 4 bedroom plus bonus room and have a larger kitchen than I currently have, so I'm saying 2750-3000 sq ft is my answer.

Perfect OT thread.

I thought it's been established for years that 3000 sq ft is the OT minimum regardless of family size?

yeah you'd be lucky to find 3,500 inside the loop for less than 1 mil

1800 should be good. 2500 is ideal. Start having to think about cleaning up larger houses.

Live in 2600 now with three of us and it would be plenty with an added person. Master downstairs, three beds up and a game room space.

Personally I would never go over 3000 to 3500 because I like my home to feel like a home not just a bunch of space.

That's doesn't include a shop which I would love to have.

At least. That much house is pretty rare in general in most neighborhoods inside the loop.

It's amazing how reasonable the cost/sqft becomes just by crossing that magical highway.

My house was built in the 60s, and the designs were different then. We have our climate controlled sections of the home (what we eat/sleep in) and then areas designed for dry storage. Saves a ton on heating/cooling, but the house meets our needs.

ETA:

Plus the yard is huge

youngest of 5 and grew up in a house about 1300-1400 sq ft. Made it work perfectly. When one child graduated and moved out it seemed like we had so much more room for activities lol
