I see both airlines and hotels asking me to "check in" electronically a day before my reservation. If I still have to do basically the same routine when I get to the hotel or airport, what is the point of all of this ritual?

For airlines, I can avoid stopping at the kisok since I rarely check bags. And if I do check a bag I can bypass the line for kiosks and go straight to bag drop.

For hotels, it means my CC has been applied for incidentals and my room already assigned. Can just grab key and go. The idea in a few years is that you'll be able to bypass the desk all together and unlock your room with your phone.

At Marriott you can electronically check in and get ridiculously early check in times and your key is ready so you don't have to wait. They will charge your card that is on file if you want, so you don't have to show that at check in. Much faster.

Duh they probably get frequent cancellations, and this helps them rent out rooms at the last minute.

this is all generally done anyway, if I stay at a brand where I am a member of their rewards club. I do see Hilton starting to have the ability to unlock the room with my key.

I typically check a bag, so I was hoping that checking in early actually had some bearing on whether I am bumped from a full aircraft.

This. I got to pick my room wuth hilton Honors last week. Top floor with larger room than standard due to odd shape of the hotel!

They do and it's great. I usually grab a key anyway, but a couple times there were long waits at check in so I just skipped it, went to my room, and got in with my phone.

Not really. If I don't online check in its:

- Welcome Mr. Golfer, have you stayed at this hotel before?
- Can I see you ID and method of payment?
- I have you in 1 king room high floor, would the 9th floor, city view suffice?
- how many room keys?
- wifi login process, hours of food & beverage, etc
- selection of rewards benefits
- directions to elevator

Vs.

- show the online checkin desk my ID & get room key
