trying to stop the spread of the virus
especially since the media has created such hysteria that people are going to flood the ER. THAT is the concern
all of these measures are about hospitals (primarily urgent care beds within them). we cannot afford to have hospitals overrun by panicking or dumb people

Would you rather be Italy or Singapore? Singapore was very proactive/shut down everything/tracked contact chains. Italy did not.
Right now Italy has a coronavirus fatality rate much much higher than South Korea and Singapore - who learned hard lessons from SARS years ago.

One has to assume and act as if they are carriers If this is to get under control and quickly.

Destroy the right to peaceably assemble and ram through legislation while no one is noticing

To slow the spread of the virus. Think of it this way, which is easier to manage...everyone in your house getting sick at the same time? All needing help, medicine, rest, attention at the same time? or you get sick, then after you recover one of the kids gets sick and later on the wife becomes ill?
Now multiple that by 100,000,000

So in a month we can all go back to work and school and be fine?

Games and a parade for a couple of weeks? Oh wait, that’s right, you’re stupid and too inconsiderate to do that.
Yep, gotta have the government MAKE you stay home cause you can’t figure that out on your own.
I don't know if you're serious, or explaining or what - but essentially that's it in a nutshell.
The majority (vast majority?) of people are far too stupid to make health decisions for themselves, much less the general population - so you have to force people into isolation.

Agree with OP (and the UK government).
Let's say we shut everything down for a month and smother this thing. Mission Accomplished! Right?
Wrong.
What happens when Latin American countries, Brazil, or hell when anywhere that doesn't currently have cases, starts ramping up cases?
The first time someone from Latin America crosses the border they will bring it with them and we will have to smother it again and again and again.
UK method will likely be the right way to handle this.

The simple answer is to try to contain the spread so it doesn’t peak all at once. Pretty easy to understand.

There is so much stupid in this. Most poeple that have it don’t even know they have it. You can be perfectly fine and be a carrier and go to a LSU baseball game and give it to 5 people who may die from it.

The UK has to manage 66 million people. That’s California, New York and Louisiana. We have to figure out a way to keep 330 million from being morons. MUCH different scale of operation.

Whoops!! Wrong response.
It was a request for an explanation.
Don’t be a prick.

a. we would be their point of entry/spread most likely, so the US eating shite helps this out, too
b. we would have a much better infrastructure in place by that point with proper procedures developed using data from the US and other countries. the initial surge came on fast and we're still in reactive mode. in a week or 2 (especially if we can contain it a bit), we will be in proactive mode.

Apparently ppl that wash their hands regularly are a rarity.
