What is the point of traffic cops directing traffic at a traffic signal?

Every time I see this I say WTF. The traffic ends up backing up and clogging the roadway way worse than if they would just let the traffic light do its job.
I can understand having a traffic cop at an intersection without a traffic signal to help traffic flow and keep people safer, but it doesn’t make sense at all the direct traffic at an intersection with a traffic signal.

A competent person can better regulate traffic flow than preset traffic lights. The person can extend the amount of time allowing heavier traffic to flow. And can shorten the time in the other direction if no cars are there. They can read the situation and adjust the traffic flow as needed.
ETA: it drives me crazy exiting on poydress for a big event at the dome or SK arena and police are not directing traffic. They just let the traffic lights do it. And it’s always a cluster frick with traffic backed up.

Because the lights are programmed for the road’s normal traffic flow. When you have a special event, that shite goes out the window

Evidently the cops doing it are incompetent because the traffic gets really backed up most of the time.
