My kids were 10/12 when we went to the range a few years back for basic safety classes and plinking targets. They shot a glock 44 without issue

13 is too old in my opinion to start taking them to the range.
I am a firm believer that a young boy should start toting and shooting all of the BB’s he can out of a Daisy BB gun. At about 5 or 6 years old.
Then graduate to a pump pellet gun. Then a bolt action .22 shooting short CB caps. No LongRifle ammo yet.
Once they are proficient with these guns. Teach them how to shoot a heavy caliber rifle. Only hunting using binoculars. I want them to study and know where that bullet is going to go. You can’t do it properly without binoculars.
You gotta crawl before you walk and run.

I feel like my dad took me when I was 6 or 7. We’ve never been big hunters or gun people, but he thought I should know how to operate a shotgun or rifle, just for safety reasons.

They won't let you bring the neighbor's kid. It must be your kid bc you have to sign as a parent or legal guardian for them.

Should've watched a video on room clearing with a known threat in unknown location. As it turned out.
That was a pretty wild turn of events.

It’s been 20 years but I took my 10 and 5 year olds to shoot .22 rifles and handguns. This was at a local, member’s only, outdoor range with range officers making the rounds checking on the shooters in the pistol booths and rifle ranges.

13 is more than old enough if he is well behaved and not some snot nosed brat

The range where I shoot says this:
They don't care if you bring in a water/dink bottle. I asked beforehand and then brought peanut butter nabs. Saw others bring sandwiches. Just police your area before you leave.
I've been paying $100 a year for a membership there. When I turn 65 in January it starts being free!
quote:Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office shooting range website I've seen 8-10 year olds there with a parent. The range master set them up and they They were regulars that I saw a lot there. shot handguns at one end, kind of away from everyone else.
7. Shooters less than 16 years of age must have adult supervision with range safety knowledge.
