How does the tenor of the coverage of an event influence the reality of it?
you're asking how promoting hysteria and irrationality in large populations influence the reality of how those populations respond?
i can summarize with 3 words: toilet paper shortage

The virus behaves differently depending on how the media talks about it?
the virus isn't dangerous. at worst it has a 1% morality rate and that's highly skewed towards very specific at risk populations.
HOWEVER, the various responses of the populations of our country are very dangerous

Italy is shutdown because of hysterical media coverage?
Italy is shut down b/c they were irresponsible on the other end of the pole (by ignoring it as a threat entirely)

It amazes me how we all of a sudden have OT experts on how to handle something that hasn't been a thing in any of our lifetimes.
Exactly. We are all rookies in this and we want to know everything. We just don't.
There is no perfect answer. Think about all of the school employees over the age of 60. There are a bunch. They would be hit before grandparents no? Schools aren't just filled with hot 23 year blondes who get put on the News.
This is a first time. Hopefully an only time. But it is a very odd and unique time. I hope we learn from it.

not a chance. this is going to become more and more common, especially with the industrialization of SSA

The current mortality rate estimate from the WHO is 3.4%. The mortality rate in Wuhan was 4.9%.

This board is still trying to ignore it as a threat entirely, but somehow the real problem is too much coverage?

Are we paying the teachers to sit home?
Posted on 3/14/20 at 9:40 am to SlowFlowPro
I hope it is an only time where we are panic-stricken and unaware.

true. this is small potatoes
if something similar to Nipah emerges with easy transmission it's going to be like the movie Contagion
i imagine after COVID-19 (which is going to cost the US trillions), we're going to be much more responsive to outbreaks in Asia/Africa

because it's not a threat to the vast majority on this board
this board is also not the population that would overrun the ER

the OT is also not THAT population

I bought 4 years worth of TP

I think I will go with the experts on this rather than listen to people like you and me. If they want to shut down schools for a month then we need to. We have never seen anything like this before.

the fact that people are denying the effects of spreading hysteria, when there are numerous clear examples of hysteria in the population, is crazy to me

In our lifetime we haven’t. Please tell me when?

Liberals are in charge of all levels of education.....they are monkey see monkey do lemmings. This is ridiculous over reaction from people who operate from "feelings" and "fear"....sad.

only because of social media and the news media. both have combined to create mass hysteria
the actual issues aren't as severe as H1N1 outbreak of 2009 ("swine flu") or SARS (which has a near 10% mortality rate)
Posted on 3/14/20 at 10:16 am to SlowFlowPro
It is more contagious than either one of those hence the death rate will be higher. SARS only killed about 800 people globally.

There is plenty of hysteria, a woman I work with literally bought 20 rolls of TP

Would you feel fear if one of your elderly parents or grandparents tested positive?

What’s your IPA stash to toilet paper roll ratio look like?

oh death totals
somewhat irrelevant to this discussion b/c influenza kills a bunch more EVERY year than COVID-19 will this year
