It isn't, otherwise we'd have won our war in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and against terrorism.

To the OP, you have the right general mindset but the wrong idea on how to go about fixing the inefficiencies. The problem isn't that we spend too much money, it's that we waste it. But apart from that the real issue is leadership, we are fighting complex enemies using dated, complicated tactics. If you ever get the chance, read upon Starfish and the Spider by Ori Brafman and Team of Teams by Stanely Mchrystal. You will see where our problems lie.

How about things like this?

Now it's been more than a few years since I was in the army but last time I checked we had 0 AAV's. And Bradleys and Abrams can't float for shite.

you can't be a true fiscal conservative when you give an entire branch of government a pass on their 600 billion plus a year budget.

A few things:

1. National defense is one of the primary, if not the primary, objectives of the federal government, so I tend to give a bit more leeway
2. Defense budgets were cut significantly and then have been growing ever so slowly (down to 17% of the federal budget from 21.5% ten years ago). Have you seen anything similar from SS and Medicare? Nope.
3. Much of defense spending is in mundane, everyday operational stuff. We already have a smaller footprint than we did ten years ago (and much smaller than 25 years ago). The force was getting hammered when I got out not that long ago, and it's coming to a head now. They're stretched far too thin, so either reduce roles and responsibilities (my preference) or beef up the budget again. We still need to maintain a solid defense posture even with a reduced presence.

Hell, why do we need 50 states? Make it just one country and let the federal government govern all. Oh, and get rid of cities too. No need for redundant government there.

To the OP: go paint some art.

The Marine Corps is an expeditionary fighting force, until the Army (slow and heavy) can operate like an expeditionary force this discussion of consolidating the Corps is pointless.

FWIW slow and heavy is a necessity after the expeditionary force does their work.

it works like it currently does because the military, or any branch of government, doesn't want their budget taken away from them. They are assigned a certain # each year to spend and if they spend it all, they can ask for more next year. If they don't spend it all they get it cut the following year. Everyone loves to spend money that is not theirs, so that is what they do even if they go to the point of wasting money. If the country were to ever save money and pay off the debt it owes do you think the government would say "mission accomplished let's lower taxes now since we don't need so much money?" if you do I have some beach front property to sell you.

FYI, the Marines send their recruit tankers to the US Army Armor School. I was one of their instructors in the early 90's for a while before I came off active duty.

For the same reason that the Marines had to clean up the Army's mess in Fallujah and Korengal you dickhead.

You want to cut defense spending than focus on how much money the military spends on every day things. I recently checked out of a unit and forgot to bring some thermal underwear and few other minor cold weather gear clothing items. I thought about just absorbing the cost until supply informed me that it would run me $900 for a few pieces of underwear and a pullover.
