MUCH easier to cath a man than a woman.

For a man it is pretty self explanatory where the cath goes.

For a woman....depending on her situation down there...it can be a big ol mess involving another nurse shining a light for you to see better. And if the woman is obese...heaven help you.

How terrible are catheters? Always see the damn commercials and think it is likely the worst thing ever

I am a male RN. Lots of things about our job sucks,; schedule, crazy women(not all), wiping butt, catheters, etc. but overall I really like what I do. Rarely catch an attitude from my friends, they are blue collar and work outside or in dirty environments and know I work with a/c. Many have said they wish they went to school with me....

There is so much flexibility as an RN. When you get tired of one thing....you can do something totally different but still work as an RN.

That's what I'm doing now. Instead of bedside nursing as a peds nurse, I work in infection control. So far I really love it. Basically an office job with nursing pay.

Two words "fat apron". And if the obese woman has CHF and everything is swollen? Whole thing looks like a whales blowhole, and you can't see anything. Just aim for the top and pray.

All that said...... NG Tube is the worst thing I do to a person. frick THAT shite!!! I'd have to be throwing up a lot to agree to one. Just give me a bucket and Zofran and let me live or die.

That's employee health. I don't deal with that.

I spend a good portion of my day investigating patient charts to get information on if they got their stds treated to fill out communicable disease reports so I can send it to our county public health department.

I also have to investigate any positive cultures on patients for surveillance reporting. Now that hospitals get dinged financially by CMS for hospital acquired infections...we have to a do a lot of tracking of that.

Also making sure patients are placed in proper isolation by the doctors/nurses.

How often are the cultures due to urinary catheter insertion and central line related infections in your setting? I know those have to be extremely expensive for hospitals to eat the cost

For frick sake. This is a job that has to get done that I would never want part of.

Just thinking about it like this, since we are talking about the general public coming into a hospital okay.. So you think about a busy walmart and one of the female customers at that walmart has something that happens to her and she needs to go to the hospital and get a catheter. So picture what you think of as the average walmart shopper and then having to get a flashlight to look up into her stuff...

A friend of mine's mom was a nurse (or still might be, this was a friend from HS) and I remember her telling us a story about this woman who came her telling them "her monkey hurt".. This just made me think about that.

The worst was when you are using one hand to hold open her massive labia but it's all slippery from the betadine and you are desperately just trying not to contaminate your sterile hand.

I did postpartum for 2 years. Hated when they would need to be recathed cause their epidural hasn't worn off like it should and everything down there is one big swollen mess, like fleshy half deflated water balloons.

Yeah we have established bundles that help to reduce CAUTIs and CLABSIs. It has really helped our numbers go down. We report our stuff to NHSN (which is a part of the CDC). They dictate exactly what parameters make something an HAI.

Another big thing is C diff.

I just found out I get to travel to a week long conference for work in San Antonio. Hospital paying for everything.

I've never been able to travel for work so I'm kinda pumped. What floor nurse gets to do that?
