What is the difference between a missle and a guided rocket?

I find the HIMARS really interesting that they are so precision as a “rocket”. When I think of rockets I think of unguided munitions. These things can hit a designated area 80 km or further.
HIMARS:
Standard unguided rocket:
Why aren’t these called missles

I think they’re essentially synonymous. Like toilet and commode.

HIMAMS doesn’t sound as cool.

A missile is any projectile. A guided rocket is a powered projectile. A spear getting thrown through the air is a missile.
Same line of thought as a square is a rectangle but a rectangle might not be a square.

The military doesn’t seem to mince words. Which is why this is odd to me. Why use two words at all? Rocket pods, sidewinder missle, ICBM etc. if that is the case? I feel there is a bigger reason for the differing designation.

The government has never really made any sense in what they do.
Rocket pod is pretty self-explanatory.
Couldn't tell you why Sidewinders are named "missiles".
The only explanation I have about ICBM's is, technically speaking, that is a rocket that releases it's payload....and not using the rocket itself for impact.

This is usually achieved by providing the missile with enough energy to fly very high up - usually into space. After this point, what will return to Earth is left to fall under the influence of gravity, although some also have rocket thrusters to help them orient themselves. In fact, this is, to a certain extent, how most ballistic weapons work.

Plot twist is that HIMARS can shoot rockets AND missles.

6 × 227 mm M30/M31 series rockets or 1 x 610 mm ATACMS missile

As a whole, rockets are short-range weapons because they can’t be guided after launch. On the other hand, missiles include a navigation system and a second engine to adjust the direction after launch. Therefore, missiles are preferred for long-range attacks.
Also, rockets can carry a human payload while missiles do not.

Sidewinders don’t have a second engine to my knowledge. Also sidewinders are close in missles vs the HIMARS shoooting 80km rockets. Additionally these rockets are GPS guided which means they aren’t your normal MLRS dumb rockets.

Tis true and pretty much why the IRBM (intermediate range lol) PGM-17 Thor is identical to the OG Delta rockets.

TBH I didn’t realize guided rockets were a thing until we started sending these HIMARS and such.

The other thing to think about is I doubt the military is the one naming these munitions. These are developed by private companies and I'm guessing they aren't as by the book with naming them.
