I've never used weed for physical pain, but I prefer the Indicas when I'm stressed out and want to chill. If I want to get silly & goofy then I go with a Sativa.
A lot of what you are going to be able to purchase legally will be hybrids. The hardest part is finding the one that does what you want. It will be some hit or miss.
One I've heard about repeatedly for pain is called 9 LB Hammer. Not sure how readily available it is though. I don't see it at my local dispensaries, but I'm in BFE southeast Misery.

If you have access to a legit dispensary, you definitely want an indica with a high CBD content. Will she smoke or does she just want edibles? If edibles, go with an indica edible NO HIGHER than 5mg to start with.

Indica tincture or balm would be best. My grandmother used the balm/lotion in her last year of life and she said it helped with the pain. Other methods were not as effective.

CBD oil can help with pain. A close friend of mine has rheumatoid arthritis and gets enough relief from CBD oil that he is not awakened by pain in the middle of the night. Prayers for your mom and the rest of your family.

Indica strains are the best, edibles will work best for pain. My brother passed recently from cancer and edibles helped with his pain the last 6 months of his life. My uber pentecostal mom is now an advocate for medical marijuana.
