That sounds like that kid would get left in the car if the parent were driving him/her around anyways.

who goes to jail? the car?
we know who goes in the scenario you just presented

Not sure anyone has addressed this, but what would we do for recreational/off-road vehicles? Would I have to call a driver-less car service to drop me off at my deer stand, or would I just hang on to my 4wd and only drive for recreational purposes?

You can't fathom the parent going to jail for putting a two year old in the car by themselves? This is also speculating the car wouldn't easily have some sort of sensor to where this would never actually happen.

It will probably be illegal to send kids off unsupervised even if the car does drive itself. This should be covered by existing laws and/or common sense.
That said, self-driving cars should know if someone is inside at all times. Your passenger seat already knows this to determine whether to fire off the airbag in an accident, so this isn't some crazy idea that no one's ever thought of. Actually, the likely most prominent users of self-driving cars will be Uber and the like, and they definitely need to know when people enter and leave the vehicle.
This is just a very basic and easily solvable (solved) issue you're bringing up, so it just seems like a fake question designed to make a stupid meth joke.

key words there.
shite will happen. its gonna have some kind of problems that will be overlooked in development.
has this data changed since 2015?
quote:
In fact, a study published in October 2015 found that self-driving cars are more likely to be in an accident. The study, conducted by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute, found that per million miles traveled, self-driving cars had a higher crash rate than traditional cars. At the time of the study, no self-driving cars had been found at fault for the crashes they were involved in.

This seems like the key info, sir.

As has been pointed out by Kork, cars already have sensors to tell you to put your seatbelt on, so they know someones there, this isn't some issue you just thought of that will be overlooked. Get over yourself.

get over driverless cars. you won't live to see it actually make traffic better.

I don't really care that much about the driver-less car issue. Just been reading this thread because it was interesting and here you are mucking it up by posting absolute crap left and right.

We will never see a world where everyone relies on driverless cars that are completely efficient

has this data changed since 2015?
Not only this, which you quoted
quote:but there had only been 11 crashes where self-driving vehicles were involved at the time of that "study". They acknowledge that this limited sample is insufficient to draw any conclusions.
no self-driving cars had been found at fault for the crashes they were involved in.
Also
quote:because
the overall severity of crash-related injuries involving self-driving vehicles has been lower than for conventional vehicles
quote:And in 8 of the 11 crashes, the self-driving car was rear-ended. Basically, all of the accidents involving self-driving cars were fender-benders that were the fault of humans driving other vehicles. And the accident rate is higher because 99% of the miles driven by self-driving cars had been in urban areas where fender-benders are common. IOW conventional vehicles log a lot of highway miles where accidents are less common, and self-driving cars haven't been turned loose on highways widely enough to bring the crash rate down.
The majority of self-driving vehicle crashes (73%) occurred while the vehicle was stopped or slow (=5 mph) in traffic

lawyers are gonna freakin love them when they malfunction and kill a child in an accident. I can't even begin to imagine how big that lawsuit will be in terms of money.
Posted on 9/6/16 at 4:44 pm to Nado Jenkins83
quote:"The car" didn't pull a child in the backseat, so "the car" didn't leave a child in the backseat.
another question for everyone. will the car know it left a child in the backseat?
Glad we settled that one.

We need to ensure that these cases always boil down to whether or not the manufacturer followed the rules, rather than allowing ambulance chasers to slow progress on technology that will save lives and kill their business.
