What Is The Appropriate Time Frame To Send An Invite For A Kid's Birthday Party?

On Wednesday I received an invite in the mail for a kid's birthday party that is today. Someone else who received an invite didn't get theirs until Thursday.
Is it appropriate to send an invite the week of the event or is it reasonable to think that is stupid and if no one shows up, its the parents fault?

Get a piñata for the kids with candy obviously. And get a second one a fill it with mini liquor bottles for the adults. It will be a big hit
