Changed my front pads about 2 months ago and about a week after I clean my front rims, they're already dark grey from what I suppose is brake dust. I used some cheap ceramic pads FWIW. Do I need higher quality stuff next time around? Is it my driving habits? I like to keep my truck clean and it is driving me crazy

You get what you pay for. It also might be your driving habits. I know I'm hard on the brake but my pads don't wear out

Could be pads. Could be the rotors causing lots of wear.

Are you sure you didn't use metallic? A decent set of ceramic pads should not make much brake dust.

Why would you go cheap on brakes?

Did your OEM pads do the same thing?

Not technically true. Some cars are just like that with brake dust. Take BMW for example

I think the word "cheap" is a bit strong; the word "aftermarket" is a better description.

Oh yeah, I have excess dust too.

It could be partially due to your driving habits if you often brake really hard, but more than likely the problem is your budget ceramic pads. Most ceramics are higher end and are specifically designed to be low dust. What kind of pads did you buy and on what vehicle?

I bought Hawk pads and am experiencing the exact same thing. They don't really stop any better either

More than likely the pads. Are the new pads a more aggressive compound? Were they rated for better stopping than OEM pads? The better they stop the more dust they kick off. That is the trade off when you go with more aggressive pads.

To help alleviate the build up, I would suggest pulling the wheels off, cleaning them really well and then apply a high quality wax/synthetic sealant to the rim of the wheel and the barrel.

This will help prevent the dust from sticking so quickly and help the wheel shed a lot of it off when they are rotating. However the dust will still build up, just not as quickly.

I like using Poorboy's wheel sealant for sealing the wheel. It has a higher temp rating than wax/sealant that you would use on other paint surfaces and won't break down as quickly from exposure to brake heat: Poorboy's Wheel Sealant

Go to oreily and get the thermo quiet pads. They are damn near dustless and have a life time warranty

Keep the box the come in. When it's time to change them again pop them off and return them and they will replace them for free

Positive they are ceramics that I bought from AutoZone. Larger heavier tires than stock and my driving habits probably don't help much. Didn't have this problem with OEM pads.

Be careful with lifetime pads!!! Generally these pad will last a lifetime but not your rotors and metal on metal doesn't produce brake dust (FWIW, I don't know anything about these particular pads but I bought lifetime pads ONCE a long time ago)

The dust is also getting all over the side of my truck. I'll check out the box when I get home. Only took me about 30 min and 2 tools to change the front pads, so if I need to go another route, I will.
