I was stationed in San Antonio early 2000’s. The hill country is nice, just too arid for me. Not to mention I was always hesitant to hike because of the western diamondbacks

First thought is somewhere like north Georgia?

Me and the wife are planning to move to North Georgia. My company has an office there where I can do hybrid remote and would only have to commute to the northern portion of the Atlanta metro twice a week. We took a 4 day vacation and drove around and loved the area. Just waiting for an opening to come up.

Shenandoah Valley in Virginia is a pretty beautiful and relatively un-spoilt place. I’m not much of a hunter, so can’t speak to that. But it’s a good combo of physical beauty, decent climate…maybe snow a couple times per year but it melts quickly…proximity to cities and amenities, and slightly better educated than the average rural area such that things are generally kept nice and the majority of people see the value in building up their communities. If I had to live anywhere other than the mothership here in LA, that part of VA would be in my top 5.

We drove around Dahlonega and Gainesville mostly. Also drove around some of the areas near Athens like Oconee County and liked it. Not sure where we would live. I want to be within an hour and half of Atlanta because I'll be driving there twice a week.

Nice rivers and lakes to swim, fishing, hiking

Hasn't every public beach, river, hiking spot in Texas been taken over by Mexicans ?

It has around us, every weekend there's 500 at every public spot on the lake

Love Tx hill country, but doesn’t begin to compare to Colorado (west of the front range), northern NM and Az, most anywhere in Utah, east of 5 in N Ca / Wa / Or. So many more outdoor opportunities.

Went to school for a couple years in San Marcos and lived in Austin for about 3 years after that, and just moved away in April.

Austin was a shite hole but I enjoyed spending time in New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Dripping Springs, Westlake, etc.
