What is a fair rate for a daytime babysitter/nanny?

And is it normal for them to do more around the house such as light cleaning, laundry, etc? The wife is pregnant (no pics) and we need someone a few days a week once the wife goes back to work. Preferably I'd like someone to watch the baby as well as do some light cleaning around the house while the baby is asleep.
ETA: Baton Rouge area

My maid is 120$ a day for an 8 hour day.
Might want to look into an In home daycare or a church mothers day out if you don't want traditional daycare. Where in br are you?

for what you are looking for, probably around $12-$15/hour
I pay my nanny $600/month for 6 hours/day, 4 days/week, but she also brings her daughter, who is 3 months older than my daughter, to the house
she does the laundry and cleans on occasion when she gets bored enough

Wife should stay home and be a mom imo

Damn. It sounds like I did this for way too cheap when I did it.
I got $150/week for 7AM-3PM, 4 days a week. That's like $4 and some change an hour
But the kids were older, and really just needed a presence in the house. They slept late, so I slept on the couch until 10-11AM when they woke me up. We just played board games and jumped on the trampoline and shite. I cooked breakfast and lunch.
Easy stuff.

We pay $10/hr. Problem is my wife has the ability to take him to work with her so we don't need someone all the time just randomly if she has trial or what not. We negotiated $10/hr capped at $250 a week.

This is close to what I was thinking. Some friends of ours pay their nanny $10/hour but they live in a more rural area where it's pretty easy to find someone willing to watch a couple of kids for cheap.

yeah, sometimes I feel bad for only paying our nanny $150/week
but then I remember that out of those 6 hours, the girls are napping for 3
and then I come home for lunch to eat and play with my daughter
so she is really only actively watching my daughter for 2 hours/day

No less than $10/hr for watching the baby- maybe $5/hr more for light housekeeping. Are you going to pay cash or give them a 1099?

I paid $8/hr for steady everyday every week work last summer. Now that they are in school, I pay $10/hr on an as needed basis.

a newborn will probably be more expensive
while they do sleep a lot, when they are awake, they require more active care

If the price is right, I don't mind paying cash. However that rules out me being able to deduct the cost of the childcare on my taxes.

We paid about $250 a week for maid/nanny and that was 5 days a week about 6 hrs a day.

$50/ day. We've used old black women and high school girls. The old black women are a better deal because they'll clean and cook you some turnip greens. Down side is you have to go pick them up and drop them off. The high school girls are mobile, but they don't clean or cook turnip greens.

Where would I start looking for these nannies? We are having our first kid next spring and have been looking at daycare. I would much rather have someone who could come to the house instead. I always assumed that it would bloody a lot more, but it looks like there are some decent rates to be found. Thanks!

We hired a woman that worked at the daycare, they pay them minimum wage and report it so it's easy to match pay.
