What happens to the ambassadors and diplomats of the countries we formally declare war on?

We haven't formally declared war on a country since 1942 and we have not been in a state of war against a country we have had diplomatic relations with in a long while either.

What happens? Does the State Department forward the official declaration to the ambassador of the country we have declared war on?

Do we deport the ambassardor until normal relations can be re-established? Do we arrest him/her?

Yes. They are generally expelled along with all consular staff whenever diplomatic relations are severed.

Its possible that certain staff would remain under the consular protection of a "protecting power" in order to keep diplomatic channels open.

Heads of state and government officials get treated well while their people suffer. These days, war is nothing personal between the patrician class. It’s all a money grab at the expense of the commoners

In WWII all the allied diplomats in Germany, Italy, and Japan were detained for a few months and then they traveled back to their home countries through a neutral nation.

The allies did the same to Axis diplomats.

At the very least, we should stop validating their parking at any of our state/federal buildings until the conflict is resolved.
