That's a pipe dream. He'll be governor to the end of his term and Louisiana will continue to bleed middle class residents and businesses to stronger markets.

fallguy, you’ve been hearing about brain drain in Louisiana since the 90’s

I think losing college graduates has been an issue for a long time but we are losing overall population as well now. I don’t remember that being the case until recently. I'm sure that's majority middle class people too.

Well yeah, of course it is. The poors don't have the means or the incentive to move somewhere else. The only time we had a mass exodus of poors was after Katrina. You're welcome, Houston.

This brings up another point - are there any legitimate politicians in this state who would be a decent replacement/successor to JBE?

Louisiana is never going to compete with states like Texas but it's almost like we aren't even trying to compete with states like Arkansas, Alabama etc. Most of the South seems to be improving economically and we are treading water or declining.

See how much progress Raleigh/Durham, Huntsville and Chattanooga have made over the past 15 years compared with BR. All three of those cities are booming and people are moving into them, not leaving it like BR.

I can't really remember the last time this state had a big economic win that wasn't a plant or industrial project. I'm not shitting on those projects because they are typically good paying jobs that employ a lot of people.
You are going to have to grow other economic sectors though if you want to turn things around and I'm just not seeing it.

We don't have the education to bring in any other jobs and we aren't exactly tax friendly. Hard to bring in tech jobs when we keep pulling from the education fund every year to have a balanced budget.

We ranked ahead of Alabama in the education rankings in US News last year. I don't know how much stock I'd put in that report though.
Either way, our education spending per pupil is middle of the pack. We are ranked somewhere in the high 20s compared to other states. Perhaps we just spend our education funds poorly or we have massive administrative bloat?

So are there any solutions that would work for southern Louisiana ? I am not an economist so I don’t exactly how you improve education besides throwing dollars at it every year.
I often dream of Louisiana being better economically than any other southeastern state but Baton Rouge and New Orleans are controlled by politicians who have no answers except to keep things the way they are.
Seems like you have some people with money but a lot of have nots who do not produce much of anything. Is that ever going to change 20-40 years from now ?
I was born in Baton Rouge and I root for Louisiana to do well and become a better place to raise families and learn new things. I don’t think we are all pulling in the same direction though.

Charter schools seem to be working in NOLA, but not so much elsewhere.
I think the best way to fix it is by following Mississippi’s lead and focusing more on literacy in primary school. You’re not allowed to advance to 6th grade in Mississippi if you cannot read well. Studies have shown that students who don’t read well by the time they hit 8th grade tend to become discouraged, then disruptive, then drop out entirely. If you cannot read, everything gets way harder.
Mississippi did this about 8 or 10 years ago and went from dead last in education to mid teens in rankings with nearly identical demographics and less per pupil funding than Louisiana.
The next issue is taxation. We have to find a way to eliminate our state inventory and income tax systems. These are the areas that are so complex that they scare off investors, yet are so abusable, that large existing companies here don’t end up paying anything, and often get money back from the government.
The third issue is really a structural one. One would think that having nearly all power in the state consolidated at the state level would make it easier for businesses to know the rules to do business here, but it’s somehow worse due to our corrupt bureaucracy being more about sheltering locals from competitors than about fostering investment. This attitude trickles down to corrupt and/or incompetent local permitting offices and inspectors who either find any excuse to deny/shut down someone, extort entrepreneurs for bribes, pass off shoddy work as passing without a real inspection, or are just so slow that business basically get suffocated by delays and run out of runway before they can open.

Investments in education is the long-term solution to literally every problem plaguing this state. But y’all baws keep pushing for those plants to stay open, I’m sure that’ll help in the long run.

We rank 29th in spending per pupil. Why aren't we already ranked higher in education if it's simply a funding issue? Where are these educated citizens going to work when they leave school?

Who do you think is paying the property taxes which fund the schools at the local level? It’s small retail businesses, businesses that contract with plants, and the plants. The state funding comes from casinos and the lottery. AP schools wouldn’t be any better than St. John Parish or Assumption Parish schools without the plants pumping money into the system.
