But they don't complain when you tip them. In London it's proper to tip 10% at a restaurant and 1 quid for your first pint so the bloke behind the bar remembers who you are.

I've never been to Europe, but I know that they don't understand tipping and have a problem with it. I've been around them in the Caribbean for years.

my base tip is 20 % and will adjust it as I deem necessary. at my favorite bar I tip 30-40 % so I get fast service in the future.

At that rate, I wouldn't be surprised if the people bringing the food is making more than the people who cook in the kitchen.

At most restaurants, they have to tip share. The server doesn't get it all.

I'll tip 20% for good service, more than that for excellent service. Poor service gets a small tip, obviously.

I always remember that these people are making a little over $2 an hour in most cases.

Things are different in Europe. They get paid well and don't rely on tips.

Yep. French servers will sometimes be straight up offended if you leave them an actual tip.

Had dinner with 2 friends tonight. The bill, before sales tax, was $175. The service was good but nothing above and beyond normal. I tipped $35 or 20%. I think that was more than adequate for an hour of the waiters time.

Your buddy is retarded.

I believe 18% is standard for good service.

Obviously if your service is poor you leave less or none at all.

I typically leave 20%, but if the service was excellent I'll leave more. I want to ensure the people making my dining experience pleasurable continue to do so.

Minimum 20% (easier math). I usually tip more depending on the situation (If I am with a large group, took a long time eating/drinking where he/she could have made more serving another table, etc.).

20% is the new standard. If the service sucks, they get less. If the service is great, they get more. I don't mind tipping 10% as much as I don't mind tipping 25%. Help me help you

Do you want spit in your food? Because that's how you get spit in your food.

Minimum 20% because I'm not a dick. If service is bad I'll say something but I still tip 20 minimum. Don't go out if you don't expect to tip

The standard is 15%. You tip more for good service, but never less.

bullshite. They pay taxes on estimated tips. Regardless of service, if you're not willing to pay 15%, stay the frick home.

Also understand more often than not it's not your servers fault when something goes wrong. Escalate if there's an issue but you still should tip properly, usually they'll comp something (which can mean it's coming out of tips)
I do get irritated when you call in a to go order and a tip is expected- I usually give them a couple of bucks like I'd ordered a drink in those circumstances. These are still kids, but I frown on the business for putting me in that position

I'm not tipping 15% for a server who is barely present and overall shitty. They know they pay taxes on estimated tips, it's not my problem if they decide to ignore our table.

I am a very generous tipper. It is very easy to get a 25%+ tip from me. If you are so beyond shitty that I feel you deserve 15% or less, trust me, you have earned it.

That's false. They make two dollars an hour on top of tips. If their tips plus the $2 per hour fail to add up to minimum wage, the establishment must then make up the difference.

That being said, for the idiots in here saying that a standard tip has always been 20% aren't correct. My grandfather is in his 90's and swears up and down that a standard tip has always been 10%.

The average tip percentage has increased over time. Honestly, that's silly considering the cost of the food and services have increased. Therefore their tip should increase with it without needing to adjust the percentage.

When I tip, I typically will calculate at 15% and round up. Sometimes I'll just double the tax.

At places where food costs and therefore my bills are cheap, I'm more inclined to overtip as a 2 dollar tip just seems sad.

They get screwed over more often than not, when it comes to tips. I've had some not so friendly waiters/waitresses over the years, but never had one that was "beyond shitty". I still would have tipped, but I would have complained to the Manager.
