Or she has money that you want to inherit?

Well that doesn't sound very Buddhisty.

Buddhism has helped me find the one thing I've always really wanted in life, peace of mind.

I'd like a piece of my mind too. Actually, the whole mind would be better, but I'll take just a piece.

Yes. Guy was from China. We talked about it, but it was way different from Christanity. I can't remember the details. But it was interesting.

Oh yeah. Unfortunately she lives on the other side of the country from me, so I've never really been able to spend as much time with her as I would like. She had flown in for a family reunion, and I spent most of the time sitting with her trying to learn about her ideas about things. I picked up some ideas that I still think about.

It really is a radically different place culturally where she started in her life to where she ended up. Her family was a really conservative, methodist, southern family from north Louisiana, and she really had to go against the grain of expectations to wind up in a place in life where she felt comfortable. I have a lot of respect for her.

There is a lot of satisfaction and alienation alike when you go against the grain of the cultural beliefs you were born in to. Good for her!

I know a fair bit. I'd say that I'm Christian that anything else, but there are tenets in Buddhism which I find superior to any other religion. Also I think Christianity and Buddhism are much closer than people realize.

Also, remember Buddhism is an off-shoot of Hinduism. As a result, the entire striving on the mystical side is enlightenment to end your life-cycle. Your essence of being goes and joins nature.

Buddhism is as much a philosophy though as it is a religion. Depending on which group you talk to, there are gods or there aren't gods and all sorts of differences. The divine isn't super important in Buddhism.

What does matter is you as an individual and your path in the world. Moderation and understanding is key.Seeking enlightenment is key. I forgot a bunch of stuff but that's a start.

I mentioned in my other post, I thought they were very similar. I took a religion class as an elective and I saw Buddhism as very similar. They're both about enlightenment. In Christianity, it's about enlightenment of God and Buddhism, it's about becoming self-enlightened.

Is there an old white dude with a beard looking down on the U.S. making sure people stay in line morally? Or is this the one with the peaceful fat Chinaman?

The peaceful fat guy. I much prefer him to the angry old white guy.

Once I looked at Buddhism/Taoism more in depth I realized that its teachings are basically identical to gnostic Christianity. Or original Christian teaching before it was twisted and perverted by the Roman government and the Emperor Constantine into what it is today. Jesus basically taught the same thing Buddha taught. All religions sprang from a fundamental spiritual essence. I think Buddhism is the closest thing to that original essence.

I wonder if the quote by Buddha in the OP is accurate or an accurate translation? Angels, demons, heaven and hell are pretty much western beliefs aren't they?

I know it's long been the cool edgy thing to be into by people who fashion themselves as very important deep thinkers, and desperately want others to see them as the same.
